European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
