Presence
The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills in this clever supernatural story filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom in this meta comedy caper. The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has rendered the children frightened. After Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor acts as the venal Jim, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about capitalizing on the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4
This Espionage Thriller
The current week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh presents a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to identify a mole among the team from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. Additional actors take part the intelligent intelligence fun.
