Seven accused members of German far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
